In 2015, Rolling Stone pondered, “What is the underlying message to (Depeche Mode’s) Pink Floyd riffing on ‘Clean’?” – a comment on how the song’s opening bass guitar riff is highly reminiscent of “One of These Days” (from the Pink Floyd album Meddle). In 2012, Stereogum called the track “unrelentingly dark”. In 2005, Depeche Mode released four videos of the band performing songs in a stripped-down “Bare” setting. “Clean” was one of these four performances.
