Love Is A Long Road

“Love Is a Long Road” is the third track off Tom Petty’s first solo album Full Moon Fever. The lyrics were co-written together with Mike Campbell, who was “inspired by a motorcycle he owned.” “I was really into that frame of mind,” the guitarist said. “This feels like a motorcycle shifting gears.” The lyrics appears to revolve around a troublesome teenage love characterized by sharp differences of personality between the couple—which make the narrator come to the hard realization that love is indeed a ‘very long road’. The track gained huge popularity in late 2023 after being used in the trailer for the video game Grand Theft Auto VI, thus posthumously earning Tom Petty a new Billboard chart hit.
