Lana Del Rey
“Black Beauty” describes the various dark moods of Lana’s lover, and the helplessness she feels at being unable to change him. While she tries to conform to his many shades of black, she can’t help but feel scared and shadowed herself. It was written with Rick Nowels and produced by Paul Epworth. A separate registration exists listing her ex-boyfriend Barrie-James O'Neill as a co-creator, however, his contributions are unknown. The demo was finished sometime in June 2013 and leaked on July 20, 2013. It serves as the first bonus track from the original album. “Black Beauty” was released as Ultraviolence’s 3rd single on November 21, 2014, exclusively in Germany. A remix EP was released on the same day through Universal Music Deutschland’s main site. Lana spoke about how she finds life beautiful in an interview with Pitchfork. Lana says: I’m really simple. I love nature. I like hikes. Being by the water—I don’t always get in. I love the elements. Playing an outdoor festival. Love that feeling." However, in “Black Beauty”, her lover doesn’t have the same feelings as her which creates the underlying emotional conflict and angst that is characteristic of Ultraviolence.
