Lyric research by Parker Fishel Fittingly, “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again” is not a blues tune at all, but instead has a folk-rock vibe. The surreal and esoteric lyrics of “Stuck Inside” made the song a favorite of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. He mentions the song in his novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and it was used in the 1998 film adaptation. John Lennon, however, was not a fan. In “Satire #2,” released on the box set The John Lennon Anthology, he parodied the song’s overuse of esoterica with the line “Stuck Inside of Lexicon with the Roget’s Thesaurus Blues Again.” The 1980s Italian design and architecture group, The Memphis Group, was named after this song, which supposedly played on repeat during the collective’s inaugural meeting.
